Introduction Nanotechnology is the creation and utilization of materials, devices and systems through the control of the properties and structure of matter at the nanometric scale. Nanobiotechnology is a new and exciting field of research, in which recent advances in nanotechnology are integrated into the biology realm, in particular into molecular biology and cell biology. ‘Nano’ usually refers to a size scale between 1 nanometre (nm) and 100 nm. For comparison, the wavelength of visible light is between 400 nm and 700 nm. A leukocycte has the size of 10,000nm, a bacteria 1,000-10,000nm, virus 75-100nm, protein 5-50nm, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) ~2nm (width), and an atom ~0.1nm.
